Fault line cakes are all the rage right now! Offering endless possibilities, this cake style adapts to all sorts of events and themes.

The idea is simple: a tall, pre-frosted cake, with its middle lighted frosted with buttercream and decorated with pieces of chocolate, sugar beads, edible sequins, candy, fruit, or whatever else strikes your fancy. Then, you spread larger amounts of buttercream above and below the middle line, and smooth it out!

How to make a fault line cake in 6 easy steps

  • Frost and smooth the entire cake and place it in the freezer for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add a thin layer of buttercream on the middle part of the cake only. The buttercream will serve as glue for your decorations.
  • Set the decorations on the buttercream by pressing them gently. Place the cake in the freezer for 5 minutes.
  • Spread a thick layer of buttercream above and below the middle line. This layer must be thick enough to make it look like the decorations are inside the cake. Take note that you don’t have to make clean, straight lines. What makes a fault cake beautiful are its imperfections paired with detailed work.
  • Use a cake spatula to smooth the upper and lower layers of buttercream—taking care not to touch the decorations.
  • Place the cake in the freezer for approximately 5 minutes and keep it in the refrigerator until ready to serve!

Your turn to give it a shot!
